After Your Burn: Extended Fire Watch Notes

Once the main fire is out, your responsibilities don't end. Here's what to watch for in the hours and days after a burn:

  • Large stump burns: Stumps can smolder underground for several days. Push soil over the stump, soak thoroughly, and revisit daily for 3–4 days.
  • Root channels: Fire travels through root systems underground. A fire may appear extinguished at the surface while traveling through roots to emerge 20–30 feet away. Check the entire area around the burn site, not just the pile.
  • Wind-deposited embers: If your burn produced significant embers that traveled downwind, walk the downwind area and check for smoldering spots in dry grass or leaf litter.
  • Second-day recheck: Return to the burn site 24–48 hours after burning for a final check. Bring water. If any heat or smoke is present, wet down again thoroughly.
✓ When It's Truly Out The industry standard for "fire out": the ash feels cool to the back of your hand everywhere, no smoke is visible, and after stirring and wetting again — still no heat. If in doubt, add more water.
